In the right circumstances, any solid tarp will billow. Solid tarp materials will always billow more than mesh materials. If you can use a mesh tarp, do it. A mesh tarp will actually contain any load better than a billowing solid tarp. Roll·Rite systems are specially designed to allow quick tarp changes, so we recommend that you use a mesh tarp for all of your general hauling and only put on a solid tarp when it is required.
If you absolutely must use a solid tarp, here are some helpful tips and solutions:
- Make sure your solid tarp is not wider than the inside of the bed.
- Adjust your bows so that they land 6” or so ahead of the tailgate. This allows the wind to escape without picking up the arms.
- If you have 8” or more of a drop behind your cab, try adding our patented tension bow.
- The stronger the wind is, the more it will affect your tarp. Crosswinds will affect your tarp more than head or tail winds. In very windy situations, it may be necessary to tie down even a Roll-Rite tarp system. Damage caused to your system or tarp by wind will not be covered under warranty.
- More spring pressure is no substitute for tying the arms down in extremely windy conditions. Having too much spring pressure will not stop the billowing and will actually increase the damage caused when the arms bang back down on top of the box.
- Some shapes of dump boxes are more prone to wind problems than others. Tapered-back and flat-top trucks will almost always have more wind related problems than trucks with raised cab shields.
If there is a problem with the gear motor, the following steps must be taken to determine the exact source of the problem before removing the gear motor from the truck:
- Read and follow the Required Prior-to-Service Procedures for your system style (All Front-to-Back Arm Styles OR STS Series Style)
- Disconnect both power wires from the motor.
- Using jumper cables and a spare battery, momentarily supply power to the motor terminals - first one direction and then the other. The jumper cables should be of 6 ga. or larger wire.
- If motor runs when connected to the spare battery, then the motor is OK and you need to check the wiring for the following:
- Poor connections or broken wires. Be sure to check the back of the switch and the entire length of the wire in case it came loose and was pinched or broken by the movement of the box.
- Damaged switch.
- Small wire (smaller than 6 ga.) somewhere in the system that is causing a voltage drop.
- Circuit breakers tripping. This may indicate a damaged breaker or a problem elsewhere in the wiring or with the system. The tarp or arms rubbing on something may cause a circuit breaker to trip.
If motor does not run when connected to the supplemental power source, then remove it and return it to your distributor or directly to our factory for inspection as specified in the warranty.
No, repair parts for Roll·Rite gear motors are not available for purchase. We require that all repairs and warranty work be performed here at our Michigan factory. This enables us to track all damages to identify potential problems that may be affecting other customers and to ensure that all damages are repaired at once, returning the gear motor to "like-new" condition. This policy also ensures that all customers receive the full benefit of the industry-leading warranty that covers their gear motor.
While it is true that you need to return your gear motor to our factory in Gladwin, Michigan to have it repaired, most authorized distributors should have gear motors in stock to get your truck back on the road quickly. If not, we have several programs available directly from the factory that can deliver a replacement motor to you as soon as tomorrow morning. Please contact us or call us at 1-800-297-9905 for more information.
No, we feel that the dangers associated with operating a hand-crank system are not acceptable. Since Roll·Rite manufactures more arm style tarping systems than anyone else in the world, our high-production manufacturing techniques allow us to offer a fully automatic system at prices comparable to others’ ground-level hand-crank systems.
Yes. All Roll·Rite tarping systems are designed, manufactured, assembled, and packaged at our facility in Gladwin, Michigan. Our repeated investments in multi-function tooling and automation enable us to provide the best products at the best possible price. We also inventory large quantities of components and systems to ensure quick shipments. Better than 97% of all orders are shipped the same day or the next-day. Roll-Rite is the only tarping system company that manufactures their own systems from metal sheets and extrusions to finished product.
A pleated tarp is sewn using a special process developed by Roll·Rite. The result is a tarp that provides the benefits of both a straight tarp and a flapped tarp. They are not available for use with our Semi-Automatic 62xx series. For more information contact us or call us at 1-800-297-9905 for more information.
Our tension bow helps hold the tarp down behind the cab guard.
We recommend a tension bow any time there is more than 8” of drop behind the cab guard.
We recommend 12” of clearance behind the cab.
We recommend adding another pump. Although you can tarp with the trucks hydraulics, it is more costly and complicated.
For Roll·Rite. DC Series Systems for roll offs and hooklifts, we recommend controls be on the outside of the cab.
Yes. A general heaped load is not a problem. If there is an obstruction (pipe, rebar, stick, etc.) sticking vertically out the top of the trailer, however, it will not climb over the obstruction.
Both Roll·Rite STS Series ‘Lock-Down’ Systems or conversion arm kits for existing roll tarps use constant spring tension to move the tarp and hold it down. Wind is far less of an issue with our systems than found with hand cranks. If the wind should pick up the tarp, turn the vehicle so the tarp is not fighting the wind. Wind damage is not covered under warranty.
No. We use a high security remote. If it gets an unauthorized code, it shuts down. There are over 3 million codes — odds are slim that anyone else would get the same code.
The Cable Series spec sheet form is in PDF format as it allows for drop down selections needed on the various options available for your system needs and preferences.
Yes. Due to all the available options and tailored fitting needed for proper operation of Cable Series tarp systems, Roll·Rite uses the spec sheet to quote and build your system to fit your truck or trailer body. Correct measurements are required for proper bow fitting which comprises at least a third of the system build costs. Actual trailer dimensions are best as print dimension tolerances may be greater than a cable series operational tolerances allow for. If you need assistance on specifying your cable system, please feel free to contact us directly toll-free at 1-800-297-9905.
A Rear Bonnet is a tarp assembly fabricated to stay affixed to the truck or trailer tailgate.

Cable Series tarp systems are available in either twin cable drive or single cable drive. Super Slider TC is a twin cable drive. Super Slider SC is a single cable drive. If you need further assistance on specifying your cable system, please feel free to contact us directly toll-free at 1-800-297-9905.
