Municipalities, fleet companies and owner operators are required to transport materials from one jobsite to another safely and efficiently. Failure to properly secure items may result in property damage, injury, or even a fatality.  The arm-style tarp solution is an ideal choice given its versatility. These tarp systems are designed for most standard dump trucks, manufactured using premium materials and contribute to a professional appearance.

The right electric tarp system will reliably contain your load, create a safer work environment and maximize ROI. Many truck tarp system manufacturers make arm-style tarps in multiple sizes to meet your specific needs. In this article we’ll explore how to determine what TarpMaster® Series model will work best for your rig.

Arm-style tarp systems 101

Flip tarps or arm-style tarp systems function like a mousetrap in slow motion. The tarp system is mounted externally with an axle at the front of the dump bed, typically behind or above the cab. Metal arms are mounted to each side of the dump body and attach to a cross bar that attaches to the tarp. Springs, pivot pins and a motor are used to carefully roll or unroll the tarp. The best systems include a quality motor to protect against premature wear out along with durable arm construction for years of use.

The TarpMaster Series: various sizes for optimal operation

One of the industry’s most widely used arm-style systems is Roll-Rite’s TarpMaster® Series. They are designed to fit most industry standard dump trucks from single axle to multi axle end dumps to stone slingers, grapple trucks or silage trucks. The systems are pre-packaged with pre-assembled components for easy installation.

Given that dump bodies come in many sizes and shapes, it’s imperative that you select that right tarping system with the features and functions that meet your needs. In the case of the TarpMaster® Series, we manufacture a TM300, a TM400 and a TM500. The three different models contain varying numbers of springs which correspond to the required capacity for single axle, tandem and multi-axle dump trucks.

The TM300 with three springs is suitable for single axle trucks, the TM400 with four springs is suitable for tandem trucks and the TM500 with multiple axles.

Remember that additional axles and tires will allow the trailer to carry more weight and will be more stable at high speeds. The bigger payload capacity will translate to more profit per load. Keep this in mind if you are investing in a new dump truck and tarping system.

Tarping material for dump trucks

Not only is it imperative that you find the right tarping system for your dump truck, but also the correct type of tarp. Depending on the job performed, there are many types of tarps to choose from. There are three main classifications of tarp materials:

  • Mesh: An industry standard tarp material designed for general tarping purposes.
  • Vinyl:  Best for more heat or moisture-sensitive loads.
  • Asphalt: As the name suggests, suitable for hauling temperate-sensitive asphalt

The proper tarp for your hauling needs can mean the difference between a successfully deliverable load, or a major liability so be sure to explore all your options and contact the manufacturer with any questions.

Selecting a Tarp System for Your Dump Truck

It is essential to find the right tarping system best to serve your needs. You'll be saving precious time and money in the long run by investing in a quality tarp system.
