Cable tarp systems are a great asset to most trailers due to their ease of use and dependability. They're highly efficient at securing loads and protecting the material being hauled. Adding a cable tarp system to your trailer is one of the best decisions you can make.
A properly fitting system is essential for securing loads and keeping production flowing. Cable tarp systems are designed to provide end-to-end trailer coverage while providing easy and safe use for operators. These loads are often heat and water sensitive, which makes preservation through tarping so important. The tarping system could be the deciding factor between your load making it to its destination or arriving damaged.
With cable tarp systems in particular, a one-size-fits-all approach does not work. Keep reading to learn how to properly measure and order a cable tarp system.
Required tools for mesh tarp measurement
You will need only a few tools to measure your trailer accurately. Having someone else to help you measure will be much faster than doing it yourself and it will ensure accuracy. Gather the following before getting started:
- Your truck or trailer
- A tape measure
- An extra set of hands; otherwise, vice grips will work (to hold your tape measure in place).
Measuring for Your Tarp System
Getting your trailer’s measurements is essential to getting the tarp system sized correctly the first time. Follow the steps below and reference Roll-Rite’s PDF Guide for additional visuals.
Step One: Document Trailer Details
First, you’ll need to document what type of front bulkhead you have such as an exposed inverted cylinder or an external hoist radius. Next, you’ll need to document what type of tailgate you have such as a top swing door or a raised hinge. And finally, you’ll need to measure and document what type of ram you have and whether it’s mounted on the inside or the outside of the trailer. Document these measurements in inches.
Step Two: Measure Your Trailer
Using the spec sheet as a guide, document these three main measurements:
- Trailer width
- Trailer length
- Rail Info
Note on the spec sheet the specific locations for each measurement.
Step Three: Drive and Mounting Details
Cable tarp systems feature tarp and bows that slide on steel cables mounted on your rails. In a single cable drive, the bows are attached to the same cable to prevent misalignment or jamming of the rear bow. Twin cable drive systems have two independent cables on either side of the body that join at the winch. The twin cable drive is the industry standard for applications where single cable systems are not an option and offer easy cable tensioning, where each cable can be tensioned separately.
For this step, document your drive location and where you’ll be mounting your rails.
Step Four: Tarp and Bow Details
Cable tarp systems provide load containment options ranging from anti-pollution with mesh tarps to semi-waterproof with vinyl tarps. Make sure you understand your requirements and identify what type of tarp you need. Document the details on the spec sheet.
Step Five: Additional Requirements
This section is an opportunity to document special requirements you need for your cable tarp system including wiring and necessary voltage.
Next steps for measuring for your mesh tarp
A tarp system that doesn't function properly can cause delays while operating the system, and might lead to potential safety issues if operators attempt to troubleshoot an ill-fitting tarp or system on their own. Once you submit your spec sheet, a representative will be in contact to provide an accurate quote.
Ensuring your tarp system fits appropriately will support efficient operations and ensure that drivers avoid safety or operational issues.
